Saba Background

Known as “The Unspoiled Queen of the Caribbean,” Saba (pronounced Say·buh) is a charming island nestled in the northeastern Caribbean. Saba focuses on the preservation of nature and wildlife, setting it apart from other Caribbean destinations. The island distinguishes itself from typical Caribbean islands by avoiding large-scale sprawling resorts, instead opting for charming cottages that offer an intimate, small-town experience. Saba is relatively undiscovered and steers from mass tourism. However, in recent years, Saba has made efforts to promote tourism while remaining dedicated to maintaining environmental preservation.

Spanning just five square miles, Saba’s condensed yet captivating landscape can be explored within a couple of hours. Saba has a single main road “The Road” that winds throughout the island, and there are no traffic lights.

Saba Culture

Saban culture is extraordinary, packing a powerful punch with a vibrant culinary scene and and rich cultural heritage that leaves a lasting impression on visitors. Saba has an inspiring art scene, with a profound dedication to nurturing artistic community. Additionally, Saba fosters a sense of community and has a welcoming close-knit population, where everyone knows one another on a first-name basis. The island harmoniously fuses Dutch and Afro-Caribbean culture centering around European and West African traditions. English is the official language, while Dutch, Spanish, and Papiamento (Portuguese, English, African, and Spanish mix) are widely spoken.

Saba has resisted the tide of modernization, instead championing to preservation of its traditional rich heritage and agriculture of the Caribbean yesteryears. Surrounded by the tranquility of nature, Saba offers a diverse array of activities for travelers to enjoy. Renowned for scuba diving, Saba offers incredible underwater experiences, complemented with snorkeling adventures. Safety

Saba is undeniably the safest destination that I’ve had the privilege to explore. As a solo traveler, I am grateful for how safe I felt on the island. The crime rate is non-existent- literally NONE! ZERO! NADA! NATHANIEL! Additionally, homes and vehicles are usually left unlocked, and people usually stroll around late at night without worry. Personal belongings are frequently left out in the open and untouched. As a testament to the island’s safe culture, I inadvertently left my laptop in the van when I left my excursion and did not realize it until over an hour later. While I was walking to find my guide, they were already coming towards me to return my laptop. Saba’s unwavering commitment to safety combined with its stellar reputation as one of the safest places in the world, makes the island a serene retreat for travelers seeking relaxation, peace of mind, and an enjoyable vacation experience.

Traveling to Saba

There are a couple of convenient transportation options to reach Saba. Travelers can take the scenic route and take the ferry ride from Sint Maarten and Saba. The ferry departs from both Phillipsburg and Simpson Bay at least three times a week. The voyage spans approximately 90 minutes, providing passengers with a scenic view of the Caribbean waters.

🔑: The ferries are the most economical option and convenient for day trips to the island. “The Dawn II” leaves Phillipsburg, Sint Maarten 3 times a week, departing at 9:00 AM from Sint Maarten and returning from Saba the same afternoon at 3:30 PM. “The Edge” is a high-speed ferry that leaves Simpson Bay Police Dock in Saba twice a week, departing from Saba at 7:00 AM and returning from Sint Maarten at 4:30 PM.

Alternatively, travelers seeking a quicker and more exhilarating experience can travel to Saba by air. Saba is home to the renowned Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport, famous for featuring the world’s shortest and most challenging commercial runway. Spanning 400 meters, the compact landing strip is between the island’s rugged terrain and the Caribbean Sea.

Although this may sound daunting, it is essential to note that pilots who navigate this challenging landing strip are among the most highly trained in the world. These pilots employ precise techniques to safely decelerate and bring the aircraft to a halt before reaching the Caribbean Sea.

WinAir Aircraft

Alright, I’m not gon’ hold y’all, I was excited about this trip until the moment I approached the aircraft. This aircraft was TINY!

Prior to this trip, several locals in Sint Maarten had assumed I would opt to travel to Saba via ferry. When I shared that I would be traveling via aircraft, I noticed the immediately startled expressions on their faces. They shared how they were afraid of the flight and how intimidating it was. At the time, I could not understand and was puzzled by their reactions. Well, I messed around and found out! When I saw the plane, I was shooketh!

The trepidation kicked in as I approached the aircraft and equally so, I had to see it through my Loves. It was too late to turn back. So, I boarded that aircraft like a scaredy cat and said my prayers.

Yeah, hindsight was 20/20 in that moment because the locals had some legitimate concerns.

🔑: There are 3-5 flights per day from Sint Maarten to Saba. The final flight each day is just before dusk, as there are no lights at the airport.

Getting Around Saba

Saba has no public transportation. The most common way to get around the island is walking, hitchhiking, and taxis. Visitors can also rent a car for the duration of their stay. Throughout my visit, I utilized taxis and short walks to navigate the island. I had the pleasure of having a taxi driver named Cyril Hassell, also known as Tax Driver #1, who is a proud native of Saba.

Cyril was an invaluable and incredible guide who picked me up from the airport and offered a wealth of information and recommendations for attractions to explore on the island. If you ever visit this beautiful gem of an island, I wholeheartedly recommend booking Cyril’s outstanding services; he is widely recognized as one of the greatest and most genuine guides on the island.

💎: Although rental cars foster independence, it is a pricier option. Opting for a local taxi driver gives you incredible nuggets on how to enjoy and maximize your island experience. In other words, you get the real tea on navigating the island!

Saba Spice

Saba Spice is a potent drink, with a blend of 151-proof rum mixed with a medley of island herbs and spices. The recipe is held in secrecy, with most islanders adding their own unique touch to the beverage. While in Saba, I had the privilege of tasting this wonderful drink. Now y’all, this was straight LIQUORRRRR! Whewwww! However, Saba Spice is smooth and equally delicious. I can honestly say, this one is a creeper. Please drink responsibly!

I did purchase a couple of bottles and brought them back home with me. 🤭

🔑: Some establishments in Saba are closed on certain days of the week. When planning your dining experiences, make sure to review the operating hours in advance.

Island Flavor

Right after landing in Saba, Island Flavor was the first restaurant I tried and it turned out to be my favorite culinary discovery. Located in The Bottom, Island Flavor sets a high standard for culinary expectations on the island. The cuisine truly shone at this establishment. The restaurant commits to freshness and quality, as they hand-pick their ingredients from an organic farm. The refreshing drinks are also phenomenal, with a broad selection to complement your meal. I wholeheartedly recommend the ginger drink, which showcases the rich culture of Saba.

Island Flavor offers both indoor and outdoor seating. The service at Island Flavor was exceptional. The friendly staff contributed to the warm atmosphere. I chose to sit outside and bask in the stunning Saba views. As I enjoyed my meal, I noticed drivers honking and waving, as locals have the innate ability to recognize and welcome newcomers on the island. I had the pleasure of meeting so many incredible people, making me feel right at home.

Saba Snack

Conveniently located in the heart of Windwarshire, Saba Snack is the perfect spot for quick bites and satisfying cravings. I often found myself gravitating towards Saba Snack after my excursions or when I was waiting for restaurants to open for the dinner hour. Saba Snack offers a diverse menu filled with hearty, flavorful cuisine and a relaxing and welcoming atmosphere.

Bizzy B Bakery

With locations in both Windwarshire and The Bottom, Bizzy B Bakery is a popular and cherished establishment in Saba. Bizzy B offers breakfast and lunch options including soups, flaky buttery croissants, fresh baked goods, scrumptious sandwiches, and a large selection of coffees. The bakery is the go-to spot within the community, where neighbors start their day. As I observed, I noticed how everyone always greeted each other with warm welcomes and friendly smiles. It was a wonderful experience to see the interactions filled with laughter and genuine camaraderie. Additionally, the staff would automatically serve regular customers their preferred dishes. It definitely lived up to the small-town charm. The food is both delicious and affordable, as I found myself at the bakery every day of my stay on the island.

💎: Try to get to Bizzy B early in the morning. The popular restaurant tends to get busy and crowded mid-late morning, leaving some treats out of stock.

Tropics Cafe

Located on the Windwardside side of Saba, Tropics Cafe is a favored eatery for both residents and visitors. This charming restaurant delightfully infuses international and Caribbean flavors, including culinary highlights of Saban lobster and tantalizing seafood dishes.

The restaurant features relaxing vibes and invites patrons to unwind in the indoor-outdoor setting, with a spectacular view of the pool. Additionally, patrons can leisurely lounge at the pool sipping on top-shelf cocktails and listening to island music.

In my opinion, the service and food leaves significant room for improvement. However, Tropics Cafe crafts each dish with the freshest ingredients sourced from the island, creating a memorable culinary experience.

Brigadoon

Another Windwardshire gem is Brigadoon Restaurant, an upscale culinary delight that is located in a historically charming 1800 Saban cottage. Brigadoon has a tasty curated menu fusing Caribbean and European cuisines, creating an incredible array of flavors for your palette.

The restaurant provides a diverse menu and thoughtfully crafted wine list, perfectly paired to enhance the dining experience. The food selections are culinary masterpieces. I thoroughly enjoyed each bite filled with a crescendo of flavors, leading me to delightful foodgasms.
