Hey Loves!
Legal and Abroad™️ is back and pulling a trip from the travel vault!
For this blog’s #ThrowbackTravelTea I am revisiting my inaugural solo travel experience from last year (2022)! This vacation started my tradition of dedicating my Caribbean travel destinations to tranquil and relaxing experiences where I lay around and do nothing. There are not many pics of this vacation. For my first solo trip, I was apprehensive about what to expect. Additionally, this was when I was uncomfortable asking strangers for pictures and taking pictures in public with my phone stand. I hardly recognize the woman in the pictures for this blog and thank God for growth and transformation. If the woman on that trip could see herself on her future solo adventures, she would be shocked at the complete transformation she’s undergone. Sometimes I startle myself (and my family) at the audacity of my escapades. No worries, I usually wait until after my adventures to inform them so they do not freak out by casually bringing it up in conversation later.
Spoiler: They still freak out.
Alright Loves, pack your virtual passports, because we are headed to one of my favorite places in the world- Grenada (pronounced gruh·naa·duh), also known as the “Island of Spice!”
Grenada Background
Located in the southern Antilles of the West Indies, Grenada is a volcanic island boasting a compact size of 12 miles in width and 21 miles in length. Grenada is comprised of three main islands: Grenada, Carriacuo, and Petite Martinique. Grenada’s stunning capital is St. George, which graces the island’s southwestern coastline. St. George is a charming city with colorful buildings surrounding the island’s harbor. Grenada’s wet season lasts from July to September and the dry season lasts from October to June. The official language is English, with French patois being spoken across the island, adding cultural linguistic richness to the island.
The currency is the East Caribbean Dollar, though the island widely accepts the US dollar, which is convenient for most travelers.
Entry requirements into the country are minimal, as a tourist visa is not required. Grenada has abundant natural beauty with lush greenery, tropical rainforests, mountains, and enchanting waterfalls. Additionally, the enthralling marine life offers adventurous souls the options to go snorkeling, kayaking, jet skiing, flyboarding, and various other water sports. Travelers seeking relaxation can find a peaceful sanctuary on this beautiful island.
Grenada has earned its nickname the “Island of Spice” due to its prominent role as a major source for some of the world’s most coveted spices. Some of these aromatic treasures include nutmeg, cloves, ginger, cinnamon, and cocoa. These spices are integral to the island’s rich cultural heritage and equally contribute to the economic and agricultural sectors. Visitors can often smell the spices in the air around the island and while exploring local markets.
Getting Around
Navigating the island is pretty straightforward. The most cost-effective mode of transport is the public minibus, offering an affordable way to explore the island. Taxis are popular, with fixed rates ensuring that visitors to the island can travel around without concerns of scams or unexpected costs. Furthermore, certain resorts on the island go the extra mile and offer services where dedicated drivers transport guests to nearby attractions, for their convenience.
💎: One aspect that stood out to me about the resort that I had the pleasure of staying at (which I will describe momentarily) was their meticulous attention to safety, particularly for solo travelers. Upon my departure with their dedicated driver, they took all the necessary precautions to ensure my well-being. They made an announcement over their communication devices to inform staff they were departing the resort with me and did the same when they were returning with me. This added layer of security is something I genuinely appreciate and was grateful to have as a solo traveler.
For travelers who desire independence and flexibility while exploring the island, they can rent a car at the cost of around $50 per day.
Accommodations
Spice Island Beach Resort
When I selected this renowned all-inclusive resort, my heart literally fluttered with excitement. This exquisite, upscale family-owned, and black-owned establishment captures the very essence of the “Island of Spice,” Grenada. Surrounded by opulence, the resort effortlessly maintains laid-back Caribbean vibes. Upon arrival, guests are transported to a tropical paradise, where luxury meets relaxation. The resort is conveniently situated on the popular yet isolated Grand Anse Beach. This beach offers a pristine shoreline, and calm, clear crystal blue waters, inviting visitors to relax and enjoy the beauty of the island.
What sets Spice Island Resort apart is their unwavering dedication to their guests, who are treated like cherished members of an extended family. The resort values and upholds the tradition of Grenadian hospitality. In the past, the resort’s founder Sir Royston Hopkin, and his family would open their home to to host guests for cocktail parties, a testament to the commitment to creating a warm and welcoming environment. Today, his daughter, the President and Managing Director of the resort, Janelle Hopkin personally greets each guest at the resort and ensures they have a five-star experience. The resort has a reputation for impeccable service and genuine care.
As my driver pulled up to the accommodations, I was immediately greeted by the resort’s welcoming staff with a warm and inviting phrase: “Welcome to your home away from home.” The resort lived up to its promise of being just that – a true “home away from home.” Afterwards, I received a refreshing scented face towel and a welcome drink.
💎 Attentive Staff
The attentive staff left no stone unturned in ensuring my comfort and accommodating my requests. One of the ladies on the staff would jokingly tell me “We will see what the “Magic Man” can do.” Then poof, my request was granted. Loves, I want to emphasize that my requests were never outlandish by any means. Equally, I was touched by the staff’s commitment to making my stay as pleasant as possible.
A truly remarkable aspect of this resort is the staff’s commitment to knowing you on a personal level. They take the time to learn your name, your preferences, your dislikes, and allergies (like all 5827349292874 of mine). This level of attention to detail is truly exceptional and sets the resort apart.
Rooms
The resort boasts a collection of 64 spacious suites. During check-in, I received the delightful surprise of an upgrade to one of the Luxury Almond Pool Suites. When I arrived at my room, I was taken aback by the attention to detail and remarkable privacy the suite provided. Safety and privacy are paramount at this resort. Guests are provided with a phone and staff take extra precautions to ensure a sense of security throughout your stay. The room also had a beautiful welcome packet and gift, truly setting the tone for a memorable and personalized stay.
Every evening before dinner, resort staff would make their way to each villa with a delicious array of hors d’oeuvres curated by the resort chef. Even when guests happen to be away from their villa, they will still leave a plate for you inside your room.
After an incredible dining experience, the turn-down service added an extra touch of luxury to the evening. Additionally, staff left a sweet surprise on the nightstand, inviting guests to enjoy a late-night treat.
Dining
Grenada has a delicious and vibrant culinary scene. The deep appreciation for spices among the locals in Grenada is beautifully showcased in the island’s culinary traditions. The cuisine has a fusion of flavors from the savory stews to the delightful desserts, and even spiced-up rum punch. The pride and passion that go into crafting these dishes is remarkable. Every bite reflects the rich cultural heritage of Grenada and its deep connection to the vibrant spices that made the island famous.
Spice Island Resort has two premier restaurants.

This upscale dining establishment is one of the finest restaurants on the island. Guests can dine for breakfast from 7:30 AM to 10:00 AM and savor dinner from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM. The menu curates dishes fused with Caribbean and Creole flavors, providing a mouthwatering and delicious culinary experience. 💎: The restaurant had me hooked on their homemade guava preserves during breakfast. I even took a little bit of this culinary treasure home with me, thanks to the “Magic Man”.
Sea and Turf Terrace and Bar
This restaurant offers an international menu with a Caribbean twist, offering guests to choose from the menu or order at the live grill where talented chefs work their culinary magic. Lunch is from 12:30 PM to 3:30 PM.

The restaurant has a laid-back atmosphere with friendly and inviting staff. The food is sensational, providing an unforgettable and tasty culinary experience.
Janissa’s Spa
Janissa’s Spa is a sanctuary that adds an extra layer of relaxation at the resort. Usually on my vacations, I always make it a point to enjoy a blissful massage. Janissa Spa proved to be a serene and blissful escape in the heart of Grenada. The spa offers a plethora of services from spa packages to salon services, to rejuvenating facials. Guests can select which treatments suit their relaxation needs. I enjoyed a pampering hot stone massage accompanied by some amazing Grenadian tea and honey.
Entertainment
The resort provides entertainment on select nights each week. As a personal fan of live music, the live bands were a true delight and elevated the evening. I truly enjoyed the mini concert performed by the band with a glass of wine after dinner. It was the perfect way to unwind before retiring to the comfort of my villa for the evening.
Activities
There are numerous things to do in Grenada. Travelers can explore the island in about half a day. Below are a few highlighted adventures on the island.
Annandale Waterfalls
A short 20-minute drive from St. George, Annandale Waterfalls is a popular and perfect attraction for visitors looking for an adventurous thrill. The waterfall stands at an impressive 30 feet in height, with a captivating sight for visitors to enjoy. After a satisfying dip in the pool, visitors can head to the nearby restaurant, Wild Orchid to indulge in a delicious meal.
Fish Fridays
This is a popular event is in Gouyave. I missed this well-hyped event by a day and unsuccessfully tried to rearrange my flight for this experience. This quintessential Grenadian experience offers a wide variety of island delicacies, drinks, live music, and dancing. This weekly tradition is a great opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in the Grenadian culture and taste some amazing foods!
Rum Tasting
Visit Clarke’s Court to have a flavorful and enticing rum-tasting experience. This was actually a fun experience. The tasting menu showcases an impressive array of rums, ranging from rich and robust dark varieties to premium blends, flavored rum concoctions, and even rum infused with the island’s signature nutmeg. Additionally, the tasting menu includes liqueurs and over-proof rum, adding extra dimension to the tasting spectrum. The rums are delicious and smooth.
🔑: Some rums are true creepers, so please taste responsibly while enjoying Grenadian rum!
House of Chocolate
Discover the enchanting world of chocolate at the House of Chocolate. This quaint museum shows visitors a journey through the history of chocolate, detailing its origin and evolution over the years. As guests explore the museum, they will learn about the chocolate-making process and its cultural significance to the island. For added sweetness to the educational experience, the onsite cafe has a sensational selection of in-house sweet treats.
Grenada High Wire
Nature lovers seeking adventure, The Grenada High Wire offers a thrilling zipline canopy obstacle course with a breathtaking view overlooking Seven Sisters Falls.
Grand Etang National Park and Forest Reserve
For travelers seeking an adventurous escapade in the island’s mountainous terrain, I recommend a visit to Grand Etang National Park and Forest Reserve. The park is a haven for diverse wildlife, including the mona monkeys.
💎: Swimming is not permitted within the Grand Etang National Park and Forest Reserve. Visitors can take a refreshing swim at Seven Sister Falls, another popular attraction on the island that allows people to blend adventure with relaxation in Grenada’s natural wonders.
Spice Markets
The Spice Markets showcase the talents of local vendors around the island. Exploring these markets goes beyond shopping, and immerses travelers in Grenadian culture. I could not resist purchasing the aromatic spices to cook with once I returned home. The Spice Markets provided an authentic journey into the heart of the island’s culinary and cultural heritage.
Travel Wrap-Up
Grenada holds a special place in my heart and is one of my all-time favorite destinations in the world. Reflecting on this trip, I wish that I had taken full advantage of what this beautiful island had to offer. However, with this being my first solo trip, I was terrified to venture off and do a lot of things. Grenada has earned a spot on Legal and Abroad™️’s “Travel Spinnablock” list. The island’s lush landscape and vibrant culture only add to the treasures of this island. I will continue to praise Spice Island Resort, an absolute gem in Grenada where luxury and the island’s natural beauty create an unforgettable experience.
