Legal And Abroad

Bonjour Loves!

Legal and Abroad™️ is back in Sint Maarten and ready to explore the incredible wonders of the French side of the island, Saint Martin! Remember, “Two Nations, One Island” as there is no physical border separating these countries. Saint Martin is known as “The Friendly Island” in the French Caribbean. The island truly lives up to its nickname, as I met such lovely people who warmly welcomed me. Within 30 minutes of leaving Sint Maarten, I felt like I was in a different world as I crossed over into Saint Martin. It feels like a piece of France found a home in the heart of the Caribbean. Saint Martin has a refreshingly different ambiance from Sint Maarten. While wandering through parts of Saint Martin, I was in awe of the French and Creole influences. The unique blend of cultures gave me the familiarity of Charleston, South Carolina, and New Orleans, Louisiana with a French Caribbean paradise twist.

Saint Martin is located in the northern region of the island. The island has a blend of African and mixed African-European cultures. While French stands as the official language of the island, English is widely spoken. You will also hear locals speak a French-Creole combination on the island. The French capital is Marigot. Saint Martin is known for its vibrant nightlife and exquisite cuisine which is a harmonious blend of French and Creole flavors. Intertwining French and Caribbean culture means that there are only good times ahead! Champagne dreams and Caribbean kisses! This is an island visitors will fall in love with! As stated before, Saint Martin has earned a spot on Legal and Abroad™️’s coveted “Travel Spinnablock” list. I wish I had more time in Saint Martin and am excited to return and experience more of what this beautiful country has to offer. My personal driver, a Saint Martin native, was super helpful during my trip. My driver guided me in pronouncing local words and essential French phrases during my brief time in the country.

Pic Paradis reigns as the highest point on the island of Saint Martin, soaring to an impressive 1,391 feet above sea level. From the top, hikers will enjoy a panoramic and breathtaking view of the island. Visitors can also enjoy an adventurous hike through the tropical forest. As an added bonus, Pic Paradis is a starting point for Loterie Farm’s treetop adventure trail.

💎: Shop til’ You Drop in Marigot

Marigot, known as the “Creole Capital” is filled with enchanting shopping experiences. A French slice of heaven in the Caribbean. Whether shoppers desire luxury stores or local arts and crafts, Marigot offers a wide variety of treasures ready to be discovered. As I walked along the markets in Marigot, I purchased souvenirs for my family. As you stroll down Marigot, you will feel the comforting and vibrant vibes of Charleston, South Carolina, with stunningly preserved architecture similar to the traditional houses of New Orleans. Within these homes, shoppers will discover amazing experiences.

While strolling the seafront of Marigot Market, shoppers will find rows of vendors showcasing their handmade crafts. The vendors are so sweet and friendly, offering an array of creative and affordable crafts.

💎: Stop by the Lolos

In addition to being a shopper’s paradise, Marigot is a culinary haven as well. Visitors will find streets lined up with plenty of independent restaurants and mom-and-pop shops serving delicious flavorful cuisine. For an authentic French Caribbean experience, visitors and foodies can stop by the “lolos” in Marigot and Grand Case, where you will get some of the island’s best culinary experiences, seated at communal tables in front of an open grill.

🔑: No reservations are taken over the phone and it is first come, first served.

Sandy’s Creole Cuisine

One culinary gem that had my taste buds dancing was a delightful Creole eatery named Sandy’s. The aroma from this culinary gem wafted through the air and had my mouth watering. My personal driver is a regular of this establishment and gave this gem rave reviews. When I arrived at Sandy’s I was met with friendly smiles and warm welcomes. They took such good care of me and I ate until I could not fathom another bite.

The menu is filled with delicious foods and refreshing drinks. Sandy’s Caribbean dishes include oxtail stew, stuffed crab, conch meat, and grilled lobster. One thing I cannot turn down is good food and good hospitality. The food was so scrumptious I returned twice!
